This restoration of an 1890s timber cottage in Tasmania was guided by a simple principle: do less, not more.
Working alongside architect Guy Edwards, the project focused on removing layers of unsympathetic alterations to reveal the original form and character of the home. Rather than extending or reimagining the building, the work sought to restore clarity, allowing the cottage to sit comfortably within its streetscape once again.
The project involved carefully removing later additions that had altered the building's proportions, reinstating key architectural details, and refurbishing the north-facing verandah as a practical space for everyday living. Throughout the process, durable and environmentally responsible materials were selected to ensure longevity while remaining mindful of budget constraints.
The result is a considered restoration that respects the heritage of the original building while supporting contemporary life. The project was recognised with the Emerging Architect Prize (Tasmania) from the Australian Institute of Architects, acknowledging Guy Edwards' thoughtful approach to heritage renewal.
